Pets are part of the family, and it’s only natural to want the very best care for them. But how can you be confident your veterinary practice meets the highest standards?

The regulatory role of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) helps ensure that all veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses are properly qualified and fit to practise. In addition, the RCVS runs the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS), which independently assesses and accredits veterinary practices across the UK.

What is the Practice Standards Scheme?

The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme is a voluntary accreditation programme designed to promote and maintain high standards of veterinary care. Practices that join the scheme commit to regular inspections and must meet strict criteria covering areas such as hygiene, staff training, clinical protocols, equipment, and provision of 24-hour emergency care.

Accredited practices are inspected every four years, with additional spot checks carried out in between—giving clients reassurance that standards are consistently maintained.
